In the years after the Civil War, the Dutton family leaves poverty behind and travels to Texas, where they join a wagon train bound west across the Great Plains toward Oregon. Their difficult passage through the untamed frontier becomes a harsh portrait of Western expansion and a family’s search for a better future in Montana, where the roots of the Yellowstone Ranch will one day take hold.
