After a difficult divorce leaves her depressed and unable to write, Frances Mayes, a 35-year-old professor and writer from San Francisco, takes a tour of Tuscany in search of a change. On impulse, she buys a run-down villa in the Italian countryside, hoping the new home and unfamiliar surroundings will help her begin to rebuild her life in unexpected ways.
