In Pittsburgh in 1991, high school freshman Charlie is a socially awkward wallflower who spends more time watching life than taking part in it. His world begins to open up when two charismatic seniors, Sam and her stepbrother Patrick, take him under their wing. As they become his mentors, Charlie starts to experience friendship, music and love in ways he has never known before.
