At the close of World War II, a young nurse cares for a badly burned man who survived a plane crash. As she tends to him, fragments of his past emerge in flashback: in the 1930s, Count Almasy, a Hungarian map maker working with the Royal Geographical Society, charts the Sahara with other explorers and becomes drawn into a fateful world of love, betrayal, and wartime politics.
