In late spring 1973, Stephen, the son of a pastor, struggles with the pressures of his community, the weight of religious guilt and the uncertainty of his own identity. As real and imagined encounters with angels, demons and England’s pagan past unsettle his beliefs, he begins to question his religion and politics while coming to terms with his sexuality.
