After the death of a United States senator, naive youth leader Jefferson Smith is appointed to fill the vacant seat in Washington. Earnest and idealistic, he arrives with plans to serve the public, but quickly finds his hopes tested by corruption tied to his home state and subterfuge from a political hero. As attacks on his character mount, Smith struggles to hold on to his principles in the Senate.
