A Russian physician and poet tries to hold on to his life and work as history closes in around him. Though he is already married, he falls in love with the wife of a political activist, a bond that complicates his personal loyalties as World War I gives way to the October Revolution. Caught between private longing and public upheaval, he faces hardship in a country transformed by conflict.
