In 1950s Chicago, Chess Records rises alongside a new wave of American music. The film follows the label and the turbulent lives of the artists who help shape its sound, including Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James and Chuck Berry, as Leonard Chess builds a business in a world marked by sex, violence, race and rock and roll.
